•Choosing a hinge

Full overlay, half overlay or inset?

The door position decides the hinge arm. Look at your cabinet from above and pick the match.

Tall oak cabinet with one slab door open, the door covering the cabinet side

Full overlay

The door covers the whole side panel. The most common kitchen layout.

Straight-arm hinge
White three-door wardrobe in a bedroom, the doors side by side on one cabinet

Half overlay

Two doors share one side panel, each covering half of it. Typical in multi-door wardrobes.

Half-cranked hinge
Painted cabinet doors set inside the cabinet frame, flush with the front

Inset

The door sits inside the cabinet frame, flush with the front.

•How many hinges

How many hinges does a door need?

Too few hinges is the most common reason a door drops or a soft-close stops working. We check the count with you before we quote.

A common rule of thumb for 18–19 mm wood-based doors. Heavy materials, glass or wide doors need more.
Door heightDoor weight up toHinges per door
Up to 900 mmabout 4–6 kg2
900–1,600 mmabout 9–12 kg3
1,600–2,000 mmabout 13–17 kg4
2,000–2,400 mmabout 18–22 kg5
•Adjustment and closing

What the hinge lets you adjust

Side adjustment

Moves the door left or right to even the gaps, typically ±2 mm.

Depth adjustment

Moves the door in or out against the cabinet front, typically −2 to +3 mm.

Height adjustment

Lifts or lowers the door, typically ±2 mm, on 3D plates or cam plates.

Soft-close

A hydraulic damper slows the door in the last few degrees. Built into the arm or clipped on.

Self-closing spring

Pulls the door shut from about 30–40° without a damper. Lower cost.

Push-to-open

No handle: a light push opens the door. Used with handle-less fronts.
